| Ethanol. Its Time Has Come. |
On
September 20, 2004, Governor Linda Lingle signed administrative rules
to implement a law passed several years ago mandating that ethanol
be added to gasoline sold in Hawaii. The new rules specify that at
least 85 percent of Hawaiis gasoline is to contain 10 percent
ethanol beginning in April 2006. Clean Fuels Hawaii congratulates
Governor Lingle on taking this important step to support the development
of a local ethanol industry in Hawaii. Such an industry represents
an important new economic opportunity for Hawaii and will have a positive
impact on jobs, the environment, and fuel prices in the state.
Its Time for Hawaii to Blend
Ethanol with Our Gasoline
A Few Facts about Ethanol
A clean fuel that has reduced vehicle
emissions in cities across the U.S.
It can be made in Hawaii from sugar cane byproducts such as
bagasse (fiber) and molasses.
In their warranties, every major U.S. automobile manufacturer
approves of the use of 10 percent ethanol-blended gasoline in their
engines.
It increases octane when blended with gasoline.
Ethanol has been blended with gasoline in the U.S. for more
than 20 years.
Hawaiis Emerging Ethanol Industry
Hawaii currently imports petroleum
to meet more than 90 percent of its energy requirements and 100 percent
of its transportation fuel needs.
A local ethanol industry will make the state less dependent
on imported petroleum and more energy self-sufficient.
Revenue from ethanol produced in Hawaii will stay in Hawaii.
Over $80 million will be spent on constructing ethanol facilities
on Oahu, Maui and Kauai.
The industry will create new employment and help preserve over
1,000 agricultural jobs in Hawaii.
Blending ethanol will add much needed competition to Hawaiis
fuel market.
